Jop Scope:

• To design a syllabus for english that is to be accomplished during the duration of the Residential Project.
• To liaise with the relevant people in the designated Primary School to draw up the guidelines for the learning objectives
• To source for the relevant teaching materials and expertise to aid and facilitate in the planning and implementation of the syllabus
• To efficiently delegate duties to participants of Residential Project to ensure successful deliverance of learning objectives outlined in syllabus.
• To ensure learning objectives can be sustained after being delivered, after our departure from the Primary School.

Location : Sapa Town Primary School

Target Group : 10-12 year-old students

Method of Execution:

• Teachers will be consulted with regards to the teaching methods and syllabus to be drawn up and implemented.
• The internet will be the common source of information in the drawing up of a syllabus.
• Basic Vietnamese will be acquired by participants of the Residential Project to facilitate communication.
• Resources such as simple english books and stationeries will be gotten from donations made by teachers and students within Victoria School. Bookhops willing to donate items will also be another source of resources.
• Games will also be another teaching method to be adopted and the internet will be sourced for teaching methods pertinent to this. This teaching method is to facilitate the delivery of the syllabus, allowing the children to take a greater interest and a more proactive role in the learning of the language.

Things to be noted: The implementation of the syllabus and delegation of roles for the teaching of english will be susceptible to change during any point in the trip in the event of unforeseen circumstances and participants are advised to play things by ear so long as the guidelines and learning objectives of the syllabus is achieved.

Job scope:

• Coordinate NYAA entry of Adventurous Journey and Residential Project. (Possibly after the trip when we have done everything)
• Coordiante general trip preparation. (Distribution of books into everyone's check in bag and overall logistics )
• Coordinate communication and notifications. (Mainly meetings, especially after the trip)
• Do general errands for the trip. (Arranging preparation work such as buying, vaccination, or money changing trips and kit list etc.)

English Library Project

In-charge/s: Cai Yuxiang Edmund, Leong Jing Seng Thomas

Job scope:

• To create an English library, consisting of textbooks and storybooks for the designated village school there in Vietnam, Sapa.
• To furnish the surrounding area of the library by putting up posters and having tables and chairs around to create a conducive library environment.
• To sort out and arrange the books into shelves (either already available there or improvised by using poles, ropes and planks available there) and index them properly for easy reference by the students of the school.
• To create a sustainable borrowing system for the books.
• To ensure that the library can be sustained by them even after we leave.

Location: Sapa town primary school

For: Vietnamese children of 10-12 years old

How?:

• Collection of English books will be done by everybody from at least a teacher (more are gladly welcomed) each. Such books can be also collected from home or from relative or any other sources.
• Such books must be of nursery level and cannot be higher than Primary Three level so that the students of the school are able to comprehend and these books brought by us there can then be of value and use to them.
• Old PETS Primary school English textbooks can be collected from our primary school's bookshops.
• Books collected will be carefully chosen to be brought there so that the baggage weight limit can be fully made use of and taken up by books that are of high value to the students of the school.
• The carefully chosen books will then be sorted out into textbooks and storybooks and index will be done before the trip as time available there in the school will not be sufficient.
• The borrowing system will be set-up by attaching to each book an expiry date slip where the expiry date of the borrowing period (about two weeks after the borrowing date) is to be written down on the slip by the student or teacher in-charge and a borrowing list held by the teacher-in-charge would also be printed for the students to fill in their names and the titles of the books that they borrowed so as to be able to keep track of all books borrowed from the library. (Will be further discussed. Probably books shall not be borrowed out of the library at all but students can view the books within the library as a class during lessons or as an individual.)
• Posters will be bought from Vietnam using the money raised from the sale of the school magazines during the Secondary One Open House as the posters available there would have English language and Vietnamese language so that the students there can comprehend with more ease.

Things to take note of:

• Students of the school there have a low level of English language competence so books have to be written in simple English language and they have to be of nursery level and no higher than Primary Three level.

Great news. Here's the arrangement for the community work

1. Set up english library corner for class 3 to class 5 children (age 10 -12)
2. Paint the bordering walls of the school of 400sqm using lime liquid which could be bought from Sapa at 30-50USD.
3. The director of the school also request that your group teach her pupils english if got time.

The propose itinerary for the 4 days community work at Sapa primary school
Day 1 morning - setup library. afternoon teach english
Day 2,3,4 morning - paint bordering wall of school. afternoon - teach english

If you are okay with the above arrangement, we will put it in the final proposal.
As part of our effort to contribute back to society, BFA will provide the paint and equipment for your students to do the community work.

Q2. Can I confirm that we are having NO Vietnamese guides on Day 1, 2, 8, 9 , 10, 11, 14 & 15?
A2. Yes, we only need a tour guide for biking, trekking in Sapa and Halong bay trip. In addition, we need a tour guide to take us to train station and for first meeting with the school in sapa.

Q3. Can I clarify how the rooming arrangements are like? 3 twin-share & 1 triple-share as suggested?
A3. In Hanoi: You will take 3 big rooms in the guesthouse (each room has 1 big bed and 1 single bed, own bathroom inside, computer with internet connection). In Sapa is 3 twin and 1 triple room.

Q4: Can I confirm you have some Community work activities arranged for us with the local school on Days 8-11? What are these activities planned so we can get ready for it as best we can. What are the community work costs?
A4: Need more time. Will get back next Monday.

Q5:. What is the Hanoi guesthouse? Is it in the Hoan Kiem area?
A5: The guesthouse is located at Hanoi old commercial quarters, only 3
minutes walking from Hoa Kiem lake. The hotel in hanoi is a guesthouse. The Sapa one is the Son Ha guesthouse. The village trekkings will be staying with the villagers. Just to clarify, these are not hotels.

Q6: Can you detail the biking specifications: eg. types of bikes, with helmut, safety jeep?
A6: Mountain bikes are made in Japan. Shimano brand. 9 chain gears, helmets are provided and must be worn. Standby jeep behind.

Q7: Can you detail the kayaking programme for Days 12 & 13? Eg. where are we kayaking to? Are we still having the junk to ourselves? Are we doing a morning kayak on Day 13?
A7: We will have our own boat with 5 kayking boat (one kayak for 2 people) so we can go kayak at any time we want, as long as you like. Depend on the time we will have, the tour guide will take the group kayaking to wherever is nice.

Q8: Total cost includes travel insurance and airport taxes in Singapore and Vietnam?
A8: Yes.

Q9: Will you be assisting in the preparation of RAMs and Notification to MFA?
A9. Yes. We will prepare the form, and you will need to send from your school account.

Q10: What kind of food are we having?
A10: The food is always in restaurant. The restaurant is not those high class one but clean coffeeshop kind where the tour guide will order the food (no pork no lard) and the food will be served. The serving are standard meal size and if you all need more food, you will need to order yourself. It is not buffet style. It really depends on the type of people. I brought a group which climb Mount Fansipan, they ate alot. So after the tour guide order the first round, they always order the second round of dishes. Rice is free flow. Another group which visit the villages and sunday market never order more, always have left over.

Q11: Has your Viet counterparts done CIP trips before?
A11: Our travel consultants had done CIP before, but in other countries (Maldives, Thailand). Our Vietnam counterpart had done CIP for students from other countries, e.g. Malaysia and Thailand. They would be doing CIP first time for 1 group of Singapore JC students in mid Nov. It will also be the first time doing in Sapa. They had did CIP previously in Hanoi and they are very familiar with the Sapa and Hanoi region.

Revised Itinerary

Dear Fusionoizees,

5 agents responded to our ITQ (invitation to quote) according to our earlier proposed itinerary. Some are downright ridiculous eg. quoting to charge us $1600!!!! Others are plain funny like thinking we are going on a TOUR! So I have narrowed down the 5 based on 1. pricing (cheapest) 2. safety (provide safety jeep & travel insurance & departure tax) 3. adventure element (providing bikes & kayaks).

After much THINKING AND THINKING AND THINKING, I have decided to switch ADVENTUROUS JOURNEY & RESIDENTIAL PROJECT to be conducted in our days in Sapa.

Firstly, the reason is that the 4D3N in Sapa requires trekking and biking over long distances, it is practically impossible to carry out any Residential Project. You leave early in the morning and get to your destination by dusk. Yet the activities we have performed already fulfil the adventurous journey requirements. I felt it should be better taken as adventurous journey.

Secondly, 4D3N of kayaking in Halong Bay is too strenuous and a bit meaningless if you don't have a purpose. Yet it is hard to construct residential projects in Halong Bay because of its really a fishing port and popular tourist destination.

Thirdly, we can cut down on the number of days kayaking in Halong Bay and use the extra 2 days to do a Residential project in Sapa town itself. I have proposed to the agent to get us in touch with the local primary school where we can either construct a small library, conduct some campcraft activities or organise a soccer tournament. The school is small and basic, the kids are young (7-8 years old) and there is a barren soccer field in the middle of Sapa town.

So, the revised itinerary after talking to BIG FOOT ADVENTURE PTE LTD is as follows:

Fund-raising (Before and after)

I thought Jiawei and Boon Kiat are in-charge of the merchandising of the hand-made handicrafts of the local SAPA people(fund-raising after) and not in-charge of the fund-raising(before) to provide the money for such projects?
Anyway, the part on fund raising(before) requires a lot of brainstorming and ideas especially that the time frame which we have available to raise funds before the trip is very short. However, one way may be that we can fork out some money from our own pockets first if we can't raise enough money for the projects which we are going to carry out over there.

1)Trip Limitations: Within the short period of 10 days, we have managed to squeeze in as much activities as possible to make this a fulfilling trip.

3rd day-trekking (no biking as the route is too dangerous)

PS: There are no single kayaks available for us in Halong Bay, only double

[F]uS!o[N]o![Z]eHi to all! As fundraising officers, BK and i hope to recieve any of your suggestions to help us plan for the fundraising job. Before that, I would like to clarify what we want to be and will be doing for the trip. If there is any disagreement, please feel free to post your replies.
Aim: Raise a sum of money to make an impact on the community for NYAA requirements
Suggestion:
1) Raise funds to purchase handmade merchandise from villagers to sell in Singapore as a form of post-trip activity to get further funding to be sent back to villagers.
-Money brings about revenue for village tourism trade by buying and giving them the profit.
-Aim can be achieved when people buy local products and find out more about origin.
-However, a lot of connections and trust is needed to make this possible.
2) Raise funds to buy paint or other building material to help improve village infrastructure by doing manual work ourselves.
-Help villagers improve standards of living by leaving behind our mark.
-Villagers might not want newly-painted houses and would want to stick to customary housing.
-Lack of expertise and skill on our side lowers our credibility as helpers
3) Raise funds to pay for expenses incurred in the making of documentary or case study. (eg. Publicity, Services of others)
-Aim is kept as priority in this scenario, where we present the target audience with what we want to tell them about the situation in the village.
-Again, the result might be of substandard level due to a lack of expertise, which may not be accepted by others.

The NGCI-EDB Documentary Fund 2006 is something very commercial-like, looking at its requirements and what they are looking for. And also the dateline is like tomorrow! So it isn't actually very feasible for us. Maybe, we shall just continue with the making of the case-study of SAPA but publish it as a book now instead of a film for the NGCI-EDB Documentary Fund 2006. Or doing it as a presentation in school could also be possible. Or if not, we can try brainstorming some more ideas on the residential project to be done.
