As usual, we did our stretching exercises first before going into the pool. As warm up, we swam for about 10 laps (500m). As the days got closer to the start of swimming competitions, we began to train our strength and stamina by carrying out endurance trainings. This involves a series of long distance swimming of the different strokes and increasing the distance of the training for “pulling” so as to build up our arm muscles. Firstly, we swam 2x200m freestyle, having only 1 break after every 200m(4 laps). We also did 4x100m pulling strokes and 400m breaststroke. For every 100m that we swim, we would do 20 dips against the edge of the pool and another 20 push-ups against the edge of the pool alternately. We learnt a few techniques from the coach on perfecting our butterfly strokes. To carry out the butterfly strokes gracefully, the swimmer has to learn to propel himself outwards so as to create the momentum to push themselves over a greater distance in the water. Both the arms and the body have to be synchronized for every action of the butterfly stroke. To take part in the National inter junior college swimming competition, certain criteria in the timings would have to be met by the coach. Hence, we clocked timings for our 50m freestyle whereby it should not exceed around 34.0secs. Most of us were able to make it through the benchmark timing set by the coach. We also carried out 100m speed intervals so as to perfect everything ranging from our plunging techniques, somersault turns at the end of each lap and our pulling strokes for freestyle.
