• Piano pieces
Venue: Tampines (Piano Teacher's House)(Wedneday and Thursday)
Dates(in year 2007): 7/6, 13/6
Hours completed: 2 hrs in total

In June the piano lessons were focused more to improve individual pieces such as the 3rd piece, Rumba Toccata as well as the scales due to certain weaknesses there, especially the aspects of scales which covered a wide range of keys.

The 3rd piece was practised more to try and correct recurring errors in playing and create familiarity with the piece as it was the newest piece among the three thus far. By focusing on the piece, I had to learn to become more fluent in it and express the dynamics of the piece more accurately. As for scales, the Major and Minor(melodic and harmonic) scales in similar motions were drilled more intensely to ensure that i was bale to respond more quickly to the scales that upon verbal instruction i.e. playing the scales quickly upon verbal request, hence requiring much practise with all the different keys.

NYAA Entry - Service - Group Visitation 2 - Day 2

Date: 7th and 8th June 2007
Venue: MPFSC (Blocks 15, 16, 51, 52, 53 Marine Terrace )
Starting time: 10am
Ending time : 4.00p.m.
People Involved: Jiawei, Boon Kiat, Joseph, Seth, Zhan Liang, Edmund, Thomas, Calvin

Day 2

On the second day,the 8th of June, we arrived at 10a.m to prepare for the making of dumplings to be given out at the latter part of the day. We shifted the necessary furniture and cooking equipment from the MPFSC to the open area under the nearby void deck. The making of the dumplings was to be left to another group of students who had volunteered at the centre.

At around 10.15 a.m we continued from where we had left off yesterday in pairs-i.e. having completed the general survey for blocks 15 and 16 on the first day, there were three more blocks to go,51,52 and 53. We worked from block to block, starting with number 51 in the morning and finishing half of block 52 by lunchtime which was around 1.30p.m. After lunch we finished up the surveys for the remainder of block 52 and the entire block 53. By the time we had finished the surveys for all the blocks, it was around 2.45 p.m.

We reported back to MPFSC and from there we discussed how we were going to coordinate the giving out of the dumplings to the various addresses on the list which stated who were to receive the dumplings. During this extensive activity, we had extra manpower from MPFSC. We were left in charge to coordinate the concerted effort between the different student volunteers. From the MPFSC, we planned and despatched the different groups to the addresses. After coordinating everything, we too went to help give out these dumplings to the addresses. This lasted till around 4.00p.m.

After reporting back to the MPFSC, we packed up the place and hence concluded our activity at 4.15p.m.

NYAA Entry - Service - Group Visitation 2 - Day 1

Date: 7th and 8th June 2007
Venue: MPFSC (Blocks 15, 16, 51, 52, 53 Marine Terrace )
Starting time: 10am
Ending time : 4pm
People Involved: Jiawei, Boon Kiat, Joseph, Edmund, Seth, Thomas (zhan liang and calvin)

Day 1

We reported at MPFSC by 10 on the first day for our group visitation project and discussed our objective for the day. In our own pairs, we had to go from door-to-door for each of the 5 rental unit blocks (Blocks 15, 16, 51, 52, 53 Marine Terrace ) under the charge of the MPFSC to do a general survey of the famillies living there. We had to look out for their living conditions through asking a few questions to see how they were getting by in particular, to see if they had a stable income or maintained their flats well etc. Our focus was also to identify aged residents who were living alone and might be in need of assistance from the MPFSC. As such, we were to invite them to an excursion to the Singapore Zoo to include them in such community bonding activities.

Each pair went about with a list of units covering 4 floors and we had to fill the list up with our own observations of the occupants there, such as if they needed financial help or someone to counsel them. Of all the people we met, they varied in their living conditions widely. Those who were doing well were mostly Chinese or Malay families who kept their houses neat while there were also aged residents who lived alone and needed someone to talk to, of which we tried to invite to the excursion.

We managed to cover Block 16 in the morning and headed back to the MPFSC to have a short meeting on how each pair has done. After a lunch break till 1, we proceeded to cover Block 15 before ending the day after filling up the lists.

Entry For Skills--Competitive Swimming--May 07

Entry For Skills
Swimming Training For May

Participants: Thomas

Overview:
- Introduction to IM Relay (Individual and Team)
- Practicing of pulling and kicking in alternate pairs

Venue: Geylang East Swimming Complex (Mon)
Chinese Swimming Club (Wed)

Date: 3/5, 7/5, 10/5, 14/5, 17/5, 21/5, 24/5, 28/5
Hours completed: 16 hrs

As usual, we started our trainings with some stretching to prevent any cramps and injuries. As the competition was nearing, our warm-ups increased. We had to swim 16 laps of our own specialized strokes, which in my case would be the freestyle. There would be no rests, thus we would have to carry out somersaults at the end of each turn, also known as “Tumbleturns”. After our warm-ups, the main sets for the trainings started to roll in. We were introduced to IM Relay, both individual and team. In individual IM Relay, one would have to swim 4x50m, in the following order: Backstroke, Breaststroke, Butterflystroke and Freestyle. The only difference in the team IM Relay is that these 4 strokes would be divided among the 4 members, each swimming only 50m of their own swimming strokes. Thus, the coach split the team up into groups of 4 as we prepared to race each other in teams of 4 for the team IM Relay. My team had clocked a total timing of 2:09:48 mins which was a fairly good result. We also had to continue to practice our own events in preparation for the competition, thus we had to train both our pulling and kicking. The coach came up with a new routine to train us in that which is to practice our pulling and kicking in alternate turns and in pairs. We would also be given timings for this practice. The first partner would practice his pulling for 50m with the second partner following closely behind but instead he would be practicing his kicking by doing “Flutterkicks”. After 50m, both partners would then switch roles and the process repeats for another 10 laps.

NYAA--Entry For Service

Date: 30th May 2007

Venue: MPFSC

Starting time: 10am

Ending time : 2pm

Today, we helped out at the MPFSC in preparation for the upcoming event: The Dumplings Festival. Our task was to assist the centre in helping them to inform all Marine Parade residents, under their charge, about the upcoming event that MPFSC had organized for them, which is none other than The Dumplings Festival.

Five of us met at around 10am and proceeded with working on our given task. We were first briefed on our responsibilities before allocating the work equally among the 5 of us.

We had to place brochures into envelopes, have it well-stamped, before ensuring that it would be sent to the appropriate address. Hence, this was how we divided the workload among ourselves. It started off with Boon Kiat and Zhan Liang pasting all the different addresses on the envelope and the brochures itself respectively. Edmund, Jiawei and I proceeded with the folding of the brochures to ensure that it fits perfectly into the envelope.

However, as we went on, we began to realize that the level of efficiency in the folding section was too high, thus, in order to balance up, I switched to placing the brochures inside the envelopes which had addresses pasted on it. After most of the brochures were done with the folding and all the addresses being pasted on the envelopes, Jiawei and Boon Kiat then switched to sealing and pasting the stamps on the envelopes. Once I was done with the fitting in of the brochures, I switched to pasting of the stamps on the envelope as it requires more manpower. Edmund and Zhan Liang had continued with their own duties.

Once we were done, we started to tally the amount of envelopes that was to be sent out. In the process of tallying the number of envelopes, we also had to take extra precaution in checking out for any mistakes made such as the absence of stamps, addresses and even the brochures in the envelopes. Once completed, we placed all the envelopes in a container. These were envelopes that contained brochures typed in English. Thus, we had to repeat the whole procedure for the brochures typed in Chinese.

After everything has been completed, we took a short rest before carrying out the next section of our task. First of all, we placed all the brochures in the envelopes into the post-box which was just across the road. Next, we had to deliver all the brochures with addresses pasted on it to their letter boxes manually. Thus, we split up and proceeded to the different blocks which we were in charge of. For those letter boxes which were locked up, we had to personally make a trip to their doorstep to deliver the brochures.

At around 2pm, all of us had completed our tasks and met up at Block 6 where we had our lunch. After that, we packed up and left with a sense of satisfaction as we had ensured that every resident in Marine Parade under MPFSC had been duly notified of The Dumplings Festival in which we would all be looking forward to helping them out on that day itself.
